Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections 2024: Results, Winners, and Political Impact

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections 2024 were significant as this election was the first state election post-abrogation of Article 370 and 35(a) in 2019. The election was conducted in three phases and covered all the 90 constituencies of the Union Territory. The three-phase elections crossed 63 per cent turnout for voters, which the process also proved with active voting despite much security concern and regional tension.

National Conference and Congress Joint Front Win a Majority
He could once again test the party’s stronghold in the Kashmir Valley, with the winning of the Ganderbal and Budgam constituencies, the National Conference headed by Omar Abdullah emerged as the main party in the Jammu and Kashmir election results 2024. On account of the NC, in alliance with the Congress Party, gaining outright a clear majority with 49 seats, Omar Abdullah, head of the NC, was placed at the helm of becoming the new Chief Minister after the elections.

BJP’s Good Showing in Jammu
BJP continued its stranglehold in the Jammu region, winning 29 seats with a good show in the third phase of elections. The party leaders, while boasting of their lead, goaded that they had bettered Congress in many places of Jammu region. But the influence of the BJP in the Kashmir Valley was restricted, preventing them from forming a government.

Regional dynamics and political divides
The 2024 elections reconfirmed the division between the Kashmir Valley and Jammu. Here, in Kashmir, the NC-Congress alliance went through, whereas in Jammu, the BJP remained strong. PDP, with Mehbooba Mufti at its helm, did relatively badly and, thus forced her to accept the verdict and stated a commitment on behalf of the party to engage as constructive opposition.

Politics in Jammu and Kashmir: The Future
As NC and Congress would look forward to forming the government, they would have to govern a region that has been more directly under central administration for years. Omar Abdullah has vowed to try towards stability and development in the region, addressing the aspirations of both Jammu and Kashmir​.
This election will decide an important moment in the history of democracy in Jammu and Kashmir because it heralds political and economic reforms.
